Chega de Saudades – Music from The Seed Thief

July 20, 2015September 7, 2016Leave a comment

I don’t usually listen to music while I write. But there are always songs that play inside me or around me during the making of a story or a film. These are the ones that shaped The Seed Thief. Some of them are in the book, some are new discoveries made while I was researching, […]

I can’t believe it’s been two months since the sto I can’t believe it’s been two months since the storm. It upended my life - and a frightening number of trees that still stand, roots to the air, until I can get to them with a chainsaw. Most of them were aliens, earmarked for removal - Mother Nature just accelerated the process for me, for which I am deeply grateful. But there is one particularly happy outcome - quite a few, actually, but this one tickles me. My favourite daily ritual is a meandering wander that takes me past my game camera where I can check what wild creatures came through in the night. A week or so before the storm, I had found a sweet spot for it - a forest crossroads where bushbuck, bush pig, and genet passed regularly. Checking the camera each day is like opening an advent calendar tab to see what emerged in the deep dark night. (Paradise by the infra-red light.) The camera was attached to the base of a tall pine tree, and when the storm brought it down it buried the camera deep in the dirt, under a ton of log. It took some time to clear the path, and cut the tree, and dig the camera out from underneath the section of log that still had the strap tied around it. I thought the camera would be flattened, shattered. But the rugged little snapper came out whole, if a bit smudged with soil and debris. I opened it up - everything clean and dry despite the deluge that had followed the storm. But …. It wouldn’t switch on. I tried everything I could think of, and eventually wrote to the manufacturer for troubleshooting. Have you tried replacing the batteries? So I did. And the lights came on! And I set the camera up in a new spot. And in the days since I have been blessed with nocturnal sightings of bushbuck, bush pigs and genets — and even a daytime mongoose — all still here and alive and well after the storm. Like me.

The penultimate day of our epic #AcrosstheUSA road The penultimate day of our epic #AcrosstheUSA roadtrip started early at the Grand Canyon - the one thing we made sure to make time for. Back in the truck by breakfast and it got HOT (temp passed 50degC!). The engine started to struggle so we switched off the aircon as we neared the End of the World… Iced coffee, and more coffee, and then just ice (and icing the dogs) got us through to our last overnight in Yucca Vally. #missthisroadalready
